Care and Treatment
An Environment Focused On Kids

One of the first things you notice when you walk into Shriners Hospitals for Children® is that they do not look very much like hospitals, which is exactly how we want it to be. After all, our hospitals are a reflection of our patients – bright, hopeful, happy and full of possibility.

Every aspect of our hospitals' physical design and overall atmosphere is based on putting children at ease and creating an environment that allows kids to be kids. In our hospitals you will find things like:

  • Teen lounges stocked with books, movies, music and video games.
  • Game rooms with pool tables and foosball.
  • Children’s play areas with blocks, books, arts and crafts supplies, climbing structures and more.
  • Outdoor playgrounds.
  • Spacious indoor recreation areas for games like wheelchair basketball or group yoga.

Even the clinical areas of our hospital are child-friendly.

  • Our outpatient clinic treatment rooms have examination tables shaped like fire trucks and hippos.
  • Our radiology suites have lots of pictures on the walls and ceilings to keep kids engaged during procedures.
  • Our physical therapy rooms include video games and lots of toys to help kids have fun while doing important therapeutic activities.
  • Our hospital lobbies are stocked with toys and games to keep patients and siblings busy while waiting for appointments.
  • Small children are taken into surgery in bright red wagons just their size.
And the most unique thing you will find in our hospitals is the Shriners themselves, giving their time to entertain and visit our patients, talk with parents about how they are doing, and even driving patients to and from hospital visits.

For those of us who work at Shriners Hospitals for Children, watching kids run, jump, explore, laugh and play is our greatest joy and proof that our mission is making a difference.

No matter what their medical condition, kids are always looking ahead, always wanting to move forward. These hospitals are designed solely for the purpose of making that happen.
Extraordinary care puts children first.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children® we believe in family-centered care. Here, the child and family are at the heart of our medical team. Every treatment we choose, every decision we make is geared toward giving a child the skills and abilities to live a healthy, productive life.

The care given here is the best in the world, and many techniques and treatments that are common in hospitals around the country today were pioneered right here at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Orthopaedics

Since our founding in 1922, treating orthopaedic conditions has been the foundation of Shriners Hospitals for Children®. The diseases and disorders we treat are wide-ranging and diverse. Whether we are treating bone deformities such as clubfoot, neuromuscular conditions such as cerebral palsy or genetic anomalies such as achondroplasia, our goal is to help each child become as functional and healthy as possible. With the largest full-time staff of pediatric orthopaedic surgeons in the United States, as well as a comprehensive team of physical, occupational, speech and other therapists, we are able to treat each child with a customized approach based on their overall health and medical conditions.

Burn Care

Shriners Hospitals for Children® has been a pioneer in burn care since we first started treating burn survivors in the 1960s. In fact, some of the most significant advancements in burn care – such as skin grafting and the development of engineered skin – were first made right here at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Our patients receive advanced care for burn injuries and related scarring, along with physical rehabilitation and emotional support to help them cope with re-entering their school or community after their injury.

Family-Centered Care

At Shriners Hospitals for Children® “family centered care” is not just a catchphrase. It is a philosophy of care and treatment that impacts every aspect of how we interact with, and care for, our patients and their families.

We understand that you are the expert on your child. You know how he will respond to new people and places, the best way to get her to take her medicine, how to settle him down to sleep at night, what she likes to do for fun and which stuffed animal absolutely must be packed in the bag when you come to the hospital. It is your detailed knowledge of your child that helps make our medical team more effective. And it is why we put the family at the center of our care.

Here are a few of things you and your family will experience when your child is a patient at Shriners Hospitals for Children.

  • Meetings with you and the entire medical team treating your child – including a pediatrician, surgeons, radiologists, physical/occupational/speech therapists and nurses – to review your child’s condition, discuss the treatment plan and set goals.
  • Support groups for parents to help cope with caring for a disabled or critically injured child.
  • Activities to keep siblings busy during hospital visits and groups to help siblings get to know other children with disabled or critically injured brothers or sisters.
  • Family accommodations available onsite so that you can be close to your child during his or her stay.
  • Spacious inpatient rooms that make it easy for you to stay at your child’s bedside around the clock.
  • A cafeteria open to families and patients that serves inexpensive hot meals three times a day.
  • Onsite laundry facilities for use during extended hospital stays.
  • Transportation assistance if you need to go out into the community for supplies during an extended stay.
  • Transportation assistance getting to and from the hospital for scheduled appointments.
  • Psychological/psychiatric services for patients and families.
  • Social workers to help families with a variety of issues at home and in the community.
  • Care Coordination services to help you with every aspect of your child’s care, both here at Shriners Hospitals for Children and when you return home.

In our experience, strong families make strong children. That is why we do everything we can to answer your questions, make you and your child as comfortable as possible, and provide the resources you need both now and in the future.

Letters to Bob regarding Shriners and Truck Show

Bob,
I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate all you have done. When I talked with you yesterday you seemed down about how your event went and now you may not have anymore. Before you had your first event I didn't know anything about Shriners. You explained to me what they did for the children at no cost to the families. Shortly after that my daughter gave birth to twin girls. One of my granddaughters was born with only one foot. The other one had something wrapped around it while she was developing so it is 1/3 the size. My daughter was very sad and upset not knowing what to do. I told her I had heard from you about what Shriners does for children. She contacted them within a couple days and they were very helpful. My granddaughter is now 2 years old and Shriners has given her a prosthetic and see's her regularly. There's no way my daughter could have afforded all that Shriners has done for Sophia, my granddaughter. You are a very kind man and I will always be grateful for what you have done to help my family.

Bob,
Although we don't always achieve the results we would like I think you have achieved more than you know. The show was small this year but it really gave everyone there a chance to learn more about each other and spend more quality time together. For the most part I believe that the core group that was there will continue to be a group of people you can count on. I do believe you are right, you should focus on why you do the show. You are helping an amazing group of people that do something that is much bigger than any of us. Even when your donation is small it still makes a huge difference. For Brent and I we truly found this to be the great for our business. Consistently coming to your show has really helped to build our name in the trucking community. We look forward to spending time with our friends and customers that we would not normally have. I know our vote is to continue the show, we will be there each year to support you and bring as many trucks as possible.
Thank you,
Jackie McGrath
